چکیده

Application of the quasi-uniform grids in global models of the atmosphere is an attempt to increase the computational efficiency by a more cost effective exploitation of the computing infrastructure. This paper describes the development of a global version of NCEP’s regional, step-coordinate, Eta model on two quasi-uniform girds: cubic and octagonal. The governing equations are expressed in a general curvilinear form, so that the cubic and the octagonal version of the model share the same code in spite of different mapping of the computational domain. The dynamical core of the derived global Eta model is successfully tested in the benchmark test of Held and Suarez. The model with the step-wise formulation of the terrain and full physics is integrated in a series of tests with real data, and the results are compared both with the analysis and the results of the regional Eta model.

The Evolution of Dynamical Cores for Global Atmospheric Models

The evolution of global atmospheric model dynamical cores from the first developments in the early 1960s to present day is reviewed. Numerical methods for atmospheric models are not straightforward because of the so-called pole problem. The early approaches include methods based on composite meshes, on quasi-homogeneous grids such as spherical geodesic and cubed sphere, on reduced grids, and on...

Computational Modes and Grid Imprinting on Five Quasi-Uniform Spherical C Grids

Currently, most operational forecasting models use latitude–longitude grids, whose convergence of meridians toward the poles limits parallel scaling. Quasi-uniform grids might avoid this limitation. Thuburn et al. and Ringler et al. have developed a method for arbitrarily structured, orthogonal C grids called TRiSK, which has many of the desirable properties of the C grid on latitude–longitude ...

Local energy estimates for the finite element method on sharply varying grids

Local energy error estimates for the finite element method for elliptic problems were originally proved in 1974 by Nitsche and Schatz. These estimates show that the local energy error may be bounded by a local approximation term, plus a global “pollution” term that measures the influence of solution quality from outside the domain of interest and is heuristically of higher order. However, the o...

Variable resolution on quasi-uniform grids: linear advection experiments

A couple of different techniques for implementing the variable resolution within numerical models of the atmosphere that use quasi-uniform grids are estimated and compared based on their merit in the simple linear advection experiments. These techniques are: grid stretching, Schmidt transforming and grid overlapping. The quasi-uniform grids are: a conformal cubic and an octagonal grid. The tech...

Parallel Processing and Non-Uniform Grids in Global Air

A large-scale global air quality model, running efficiently on a single vector processor, is enhanced to make more realistic and more long-term simulations feasible. Two strategies are combined: non-uniform grids and parallel processing. The communication through the hierarchy of non-uniform grids interferes with the inter-processor communication. We discuss load balance in the decomposition of...
